Inspired by the fierce textbook from Harry Potter, there are plenty of cake versions online. Very few of them were furry, which I found odd. The Birthday Boy's parents sprinkled shredded pieces of paper around the cake as part of the display.
And as if that weren't enough...check out the inside:

Pretty cool, eh? I've seen this done online a couple different times but never with any directions. I happened to be feeling a bit adventurous while designing this cake and decided to try it. I call it "Magic Cake" (possibly "Rainbow" if it's for a girl) and I'd love to hear your feedback. Would you (or your kids) be more interested if the inside looked like this? The flavor is a mild vanilla.

That has to be the best "Monster Book of Monsters" cake I've seen! Your hands must have been aching from piping all that fur!
You are so talented, Jessica! I love this monster cake. I only wish I lived closer so I could have you make one for Jack. He would love it! Hope you are doing well! I love reading your blog and following what you are up to. You kiddos are as cute as you are!
Your cakes make me smile. :)

Amazing! Everything about it is amazing! The furriness, the eyes and the colorful inside! I would totally love a cake with this fun surprize inside. I think it would be a fav with kids!
I LOVE your Monster Book of Monsters! I have several Harry Potter fan friends who would love this for a birthday cake!
I loved your cake! I copied it's look for a cake today for Harry Potter's Birthday! Everyone loved it, with my grandmother's secret frosting recipe. Thanks for the idea!
Thank you, Anonymous! Glad to hear it was a hit!
I love this, someone asked if I could make a Harry Potter cake and I started looking for ideas and found this. I'll be a challenge :D
What tips Did u use was it A grass tip and a piping and a leaf one for the tounge
I would like to make this cake for my son in a few weeks. Can you tell me what tips you used to achieve the furry look?
Since so many people have asked, I thought I'd answer. For the fur, I used Wilton's #233 tip, also called the grass tip. The tongue is made from fondant.
Thank you so much for your advice and suggestions! I appreciate it!
what did you use for the eyes?
The eyes are either balls of fondant or different sizes of gumballs. Really, any yellow-coated candy would work.
This is amazing! but I live in South Queensland Australia. :( I wish that I could make it alas I cannot bake well so my dram will never come true. D:
